Dr Greg Mellers – A tribute

On Friday 6th September, 2019 early career plant scientist and all-round genetics enthusiast Greg Mellers tragically passed away, aged 29.

In his short career he was a passionate advocate for the power of plants.  His PhD research explored the genetic basis of floral trait variation and his love of floral evolution saw him contribute to Carol Klein’s Plant Odysseys on BBC Two in 2015.  He then joined the NIAB Genetics & Breeding team as a post-doc and worked on a range of projects exploring the potential to exploit genetic variation for cereal crop improvement.

At the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show he brought his truly infectious enthusiasm to the Genetics Society “A Flowering of Genetics” garden and his discussion of snapdragon hybrid zones can be heard on the Genetics Unzipped “Up the Garden Path” podcast .

Greg was a generous and much loved friend, colleague and collaborator and he is deeply missed by all who had the privilege of meeting him.
